Daniel I. LaPorte, 55, of South 13th Street, Niles died at 8:51 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010 at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles of a very brief illness.

He was born Nov. 18, 1954 in South Bend to Fausto LaPorte and Genevieve (Miller) LaPorte. He lived in Niles since moving from New Orleans in 1985.

He was a former employee of Dial-A-Ride in Niles. He graduated from Brandywine High School with the class of 1976, and from Ferris State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He was an avid Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan.

On March 29, 1981 in Louisville, Miss., he married Mildred E. (Butters) LaPorte, who survives.

Other surviving family include sisters, June Rothrock of Buchanan and Cheryl Goskie of Cassopolis; brothers, Jerry LaPorte of Fort Wayne, Ind., Michael LaPorte of Niles and Phillip LaPorte of Cassopolis; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sisters, Renee LaPorte and Marcella LaPorte; and his brothers, David LaPorte, Tony LaPorte and Christopher LaPorte.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010 at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles with the Rev. Troy Bowers of Edwardsburg officiating.

Burial will be held at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, Niles. Friends may call one hour prior to services.
