Berrien Road Commission: Help make snowplowing easier
Published 12:09 pm Thursday, January 7, 2010
The Berrien County Road Commission is making some requests to help make the snowplowing season easier for everyone:
• Please be patient. They begin plowing the primary or main roads during storms and work their way out to secondary and subdivision streets. If the snow persists, subdivision plowing may be delayed while they work on keeping main and secondary roads open and safe.
• Mailboxes should be marked so that they are easily visible to plow drivers. They should be securely fastened to posts so that the force of flying snow from plows doesn’t dislodge them.
• It is illegal to park vehicles in roadways or in turnarounds. The Road Commission assumes no responsibility for accidents by such parked vehicles, but it might hold the driver of those vehicles responsible.
• Drivers who are forced to abandon vehicles in roadways or right-of-ways during severe weather should call a tow truck to have the vehicle removed.
• Drivers should remain a car length behind snowplow trucks. Road Commission trucks might back up at intersections. If drivers of other vehicles get too close behind trucks, snowplow drivers might not be able to see them.
• Do not plow snow from your driveway on or across the road. It is illegal.
• Do not pile snow high near intersections and driveways, obstructing other’s vision.
• Children should not be allowed to play by roads or ditches or build tunnels in snow banks by the road.
If you believe you have an emergency that requires immediate action, call 911 and the sheriff’s department will coordinate emergency efforts with the Road Commission.
