Lowe, Highsmith off to quick start for Chieftain cagers

Dowagiac senior Torie Lowe and freshman Dontel Highsmith have started off their 2009-10 campaigns in high style.
Lowe is averaging 20 points per game heading into Friday night’s Wolverine Conference battle with Gull Lake.
The senior nettted 30 points against Allegan for a season high.
She also has nine steals and 12 rebounds for the Chieftains, who are 2-1.
Lowe is shooting 42.2 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line.
Kaisha Martin is second on the team in scoring as she is averaging 10.3 points per game to go along with 2.3 assists per game. She is also averaging four steals a game.
As a team, Dowagiac is averaging 52.3 points per game, while allowing 47.3 points a contest.
Opponents are shooting 31 percent from the field. The Chieftains are shooting 36 percent from the floor.
Correshia Rodgers is third on the team in scoring with an average of 9.3 points per contest. She is averaging 4.3 steals per game to lead Dowagiac.
The Chieftain girls’ freshmen and junior varsity squads will head to Richmond tonight to take on Gull Lake.
The freshmen will tip things off at 6 p.m. The JV contest is slated for 7:15.
Highsmith opened up a lot of eyes in his debut against Allegan when he netted a game-high 31 points.
The freshman point guard backed that up with 15 points on Tuesday night as the Chieftains improved to 2-0.
Highsmith is averaging 23 points per game.
Damone Huff is the second leading scorer as he has netted 13 points in each of the first two contests.
As a team, Dowagiac is averaging 74.5 points per game, which the Chieftains are allowing its opponents 56 points per contest.
Dowagiac’s freshmen and junior varsity boys’ teams will play host to Gull Lake this evening.
The freshmen game will begin at 6 p.m., withe junior varsity game slated to begin at 7:15.
Friday night’s games will be the last of the 2009 portion of the Chieftains’ schedule.
