Two of the Wolverine Conference’s top wrestling teams came calling Monday night in a make up quad.

The Chieftains were swept by visiting South Haven and Allegan, which is the defending league champion.

The Rams handed Dowagiac a 46-25 setback in the first match of the night, while the Tigers posted a 65-12 win.

The Chieftains had leads early in both matches.

Senior Sinjin Ownby was the lone Dowagiac wrestler to earn two victories.

Ownby pinned South Haven’s Matt White in 1:16 at 285-pounds and then stuck No. 7 ranked Steve Blank of Allegan in 25 seconds.

Earning wins against South Haven were Jacob Worthington (103), Andrew Roden (119), Ryan Smit (125) and Ben Luth (130).

The only other win for Dowagiac against Allegan came in the first bout when Anthony Nelson won by injury default over Ben Falkner, who was unable to continue after sustaining a shoulder injury on the opening takedown.

“I know people are going to get tired of hearing this, but we are getting better,” Dowagiac coach John Green said after the match. “This might be the best Allegan team they have had. We still have too many holes in the line up right now. We have some good young kids, but they are first year wrestlers. We are going to have to have some of them step up and close up those gaps.”

Dowagiac will wrestle at Paw Paw on Wednesday.
