COA activities for October

CASSOPOLIS – The following activities are scheduled the Cass County Council on Aging in October:
Oct. 1, Thursday: Medication Drop-off. Bring in unused, expired or unwanted medications for proper disposal from 10 a.m. to noon. Medications must be in their original, labeled containers and signed in when dropped off.
Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, Saturdays: Yoga. Stretch and strengthen with registered instructor Margaret Filchak from 9 to 10 a.m. $8 per class.
Oct. 6, 13, 20, and 27, Tuesdays: Computer Class. In this free class for beginners through experienced users, instructor Tim Wiggins answers questions and demonstrates computer techniques. Call the COA to register. 11 a.m.
Oct. 7, 12, 21 and 26, Mondays and Wednesdays: Computer Assistance. Hands-on computer assistance provided by Jennifer Ray and Tim Wiggins from Cass District Library. Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, 1 to 3 p.m.
Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28, and Nov. 4, 11, 18: Wednesdays: Telling Your Life Story: A Guided Autobiography. Learn techniques for organizing your own life story through common themes and priming questions that evoke memories of events seemingly forgotten. $50 includes all course materials. Registration required. 9 a.m. to noon
Oct. 7, Wednesday: Low Vision Support Group. Learn from and share with others who are living with low vision. 1 to 3 p.m.
Oct. 8, Thursday: Glasses Repair and Eye Checks. Free service from Dr. Alan Montgomery. Walk-in from 9 a.m. to noon.
Oct. 10, Saturday: Pig Out for Meals on Wheels. Hog roast, live and silent auctions, dancing to support Cass County’s Meals on Wheels program. 5 to 9 p.m.
Oct. 12 and 13, Monday and Tuesday: Brain Aerobics. “Fitness for your Mind” exercises the brain and stimulates neurons. This is a free class, but you must register due to space limitations. This class is open to everyone. Monday at COA in Cassopolis, Tuesday at Lincoln Community Center in Dowagiac. 10 a.m. to noon.
Oct. 12, Monday: Movies for Grown-ups. The film series continues with “Last Chance Harvey,” rated by AARP as one of the best movies for grown-ups in 2008. Enjoy the film and free popcorn beginning at 1 p.m.
Oct. 19 Monday: Cancer Support Group. The Cancer Support Group at the COA is led by a registered nurse at the COA. Open to anyone looking for support during the journey of cancer treatment. 1 p.m.
Oct. 21, Wednesday: Arthritis Information Day. Dr. Alan Birnbaum from Arthritis Care of Michiana will discuss the major types of arthritis. 1 to 3 p.m.
Oct. 21, Wednesday: Medicare Part D Overview. The COA’s Case Manager, Dora Moore, will give a basic overview of the program and answer questions. For specific information about individual choices and situations, please make an appointment. 2 p.m.
Oct. 28, Wednesday: Caregiver’s Support Group. Aimed at those taking care of ill or elderly loved ones, the group offers a chance for caregivers to discuss issues, coping strategies, and gain support from others. Care services during the meeting for those in need can be arranged free of charge by calling the COA at (269) 445-8110 or (800) 323-0390. 1-3 p.m.
Oct. 29, Thursday: Halloween Party. Dress up and enjoy fun and games over the lunch hour. Noon.
