Plane crashes in field

At 9:24 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, Berrien County Public Safety Communication Center received a cellular 911 call from a pilot of a small plane that he had crashed in a bean field, Sgt. Rick Biggart reported.

The pilot, Dave Regan, 71, of Berrien Springs, stated he was unaware of where he was, but described the area around him.

With the help of the 911 Dispatch Center, the enhanced 911 system, and South Bend, Ind., Regional Airport, responding units were able to locate the pilot.

Regal was transported from the bean field at 5801 Old Pipestone in Pipestone Township by Medic 1 ambulance to Lakeland, where he was treated for his injuries.

This investigation has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Responders also included the Eau Claire-Berrien-Pipestone Township Fire Department, Aircare from Kalamazoo and Southwest Regional Airport.
