All dressed in matching blue shirts, this year’s scholarship recipients handed out prizes to the those who came out Thursday to support the annual Cass County Community Policing Scholarship golf outing at Hampshire Golf Course.

Cass County Sheriff Joseph M. Underwood Jr. introduced the winners of the $500 scholarships:

Lindsey Davis, 18, an Edwardsburg High School graduate, attending Southwestern Michigan College (SMC), is the daughter of Kathy and Buddy Davis.

Stephanie Luke, 20, a Dowagiac Union High School graduate, also attends SMC and is the daughter of Keith and DeDee Luke.

Chelsey Preston, 19, a DUHS graduate, attends SMC and is the daughter of Linda and Pete Preston.

Cassie Borsa, 18, a Ross Beatty High School graduate from Cassopolis, is the daughter of Robin and Dennis Borsa and attends SMC.

Reva Ivens, 18, is a graduate of Ross Beatty High School in Cassopolis and attends Baker College. She is the daughter of Rhonda and Rick Ivens.

Jessica Adam, 18, is also a Cassopolis RBHS graduate and attends Western Michigan University. She is the daughter of Bruce and Dawn Adam.

Beth Miller, 19, is a Niles High School graduate and the daughter of Herb and Joyce Miller. She attends Grand Valley State University.

Derek Carpenter, 19, is the son of Mark and Dorrena Carpenter and a DUHS graduate.

Arty Smith, 20, is in his second year at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. He graduated from DUHS.

Community policing scholarship applications are available each year to high school seniors and college freshmen from Cass County. Up to six $500 scholarships will be awarded to SMC and up to two $500 scholarships to any other Michigan college/university.

Scholarship applications are also available at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office or through the high school guidance offices. Students applying for the Cass County Community Policing Scholarship do not need to be enrolled in law enforcement studies.

This is the 12th year this scholarship program was available. Up to now, $47,000 has been awarded to Cass County students who have chosen to continue their education by attending college and applying for this scholarship.

Each year, with the assistance of local businesses and residents, a golf outing is held to raise money to make these scholarships possible.
