Diamond Dawgs go 2-2 at Irish Elite tourney

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Dowagiac Diamond Dawgs went 2-2 at the Irish Elite Tournament held this past weekend.

The Diamond Dawgs defeated the Elkhart Titans No. 2 1-0 and the Ontario Nationals 13-0 on Friday.

On Saturday, Dowagiac fell to the Michiana Scrappers 14-0 and to the Indianapolis Panthers 3-2.

“Overall, I thought we had a very competitive showing in a tournament with good competition,” Diamond Dawgs coach Bryan Henry said. “Unfortunately, we were unable to advance out of pool play with a 2-2 record because of the tie-breaker format.”

Jason Turner and Zac Hyatt combined on a two-hitter with four strikeouts.

Turner picked up the win as he went six innings. Hyatt pitched the seventh for a save.

The Diamond Dawgs finished with six hits. Aaron Blaske, Alex Miller, Hyatt, Turner, Justin Gordy and Andrew Kurdelmeyer all had singles.

Hyatt went the distance, tossing a one-hitter with 16 stikeouts.
Dowagiac finished with eight hits.

Blaske had a double and three RBIs, while Hyatt had a single and a double. Turner finished with two hits. Miller, Kurdelmeyer and Tony Brooks also had hits.
Gordy and Chris Gantt both drove in runs with sacrifice flys.

Dowagiac had just two hits in the contest, singles by Kurdelmeyer and Todd McIntyre.

Blaske took the loss. Gantt and Kurdelmeyer also took the mound for the Diamond Dawgs.

The Diamond Dawgs outhit the Panthers 9-6, but a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh kept Dowagiac from advancing.

Turner had two hits and a RBI, while Gordy also had two hits.

Gantt singled and drove in a run. Blaske, Kurdelmeyer and Cal Cox also had hits.

Tanner Melvin went the distance, scattering six hits with seven strikeouts.
