A 21-year-old Niles man died Sunday morning when the motorcycle he was driving rear-ended a car northbound on South 11th Street, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department said.

Stephen Maines, 21, was fatally injured after running into a Toyota car driven by a 70-year-old Niles woman. The driver of the Toyota had stopped for a dog on the road and had just begun moving again when Maines’ motorcycle collided with the rear of the vehicle.

Maines’ 16-year-old passenger was transported to Memorial Hospital-South Bend, where she was being treated for injuries Sunday afternoon. The driver of the car and a passenger were uninjured.
