DOWAGIAC – A soup and salad luncheon at Dowagiac Elks Lodge 889 on Wednesday, Aug. 12 kicks off the new "Coins for Cass County Cancer Service" fundraiser.
Cost of the luncheon, which begins at 11:30 a.m., is $15 per person.
Cancer Service President Don Hall of Dowagiac said guest speakers include Dr. Rudolph M. Navari, M.D., Ph.D., assistant dean and director of the Indiana University School of Medicine, South Bend campus, and director of the Cancer Institute at the University of Notre Dame, and Cheryl Weise, board member with the Berrien County Cancer Service.
Hall said this will be a countywide fundraiser. The Cancer Service hopes to involve individuals, schools and businesses.
For reservations and/or information concerning the luncheon or the Cass County Cancer Service contact: Linda Minnix, (269) 641-7998 if you live south of Cassopolis; or Hall at (269) 782-5958 if you live north of Cassopolis.
"We hope that you will attend the luncheon and support our service so that we may continue our assistance to the cancer patients of Cass County," said Hall, a cancer survivor.
Cass County Cancer Service was formed in 1991 by a group of volunteers who wanted to provide services to cancer patients of Cass County who were not able to obtain supplies, equipment or services because of lack of insurance or for some reason didn't qualify for benefits.
Other organizations did fundraising in the county, but very little was being returned to be used for Cass County residents. Therefore, CCCS formed.
Cass County Cancer Service is a non-profit organization. There is no paid staff. All members volunteer.
Monies the service uses are obtained through memorials from funeral homes, individual donations, grants and fundraising.
The service supplies equipment such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, shower chairs, walkers, canes, crutches and toilet extenders.
Limited financial assistance is available for prescription drugs, medical supplies and nutritional supplements.
Services are supplied to patients at no cost. Equipment is loaned to the patient with the understanding of his/her family that it is to be returned when no longer needed. There is no time limit for use of equipment.
Donations are gratefully accepted for use in Cass County.
