Mona Bennett, 87, of State Road 23, Granger, Ind. and formerly of Buchanan and Niles, died at 11:29 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Hospice House in South Bend, Ind.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 28, at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles, with Pastor Steve Meck of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends and relatives beginning one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
She was born weighing only four pounds on Dec. 29, 1921, in Bridgman, to Earl F. and Cleo I. (Burgoyne) Weaver.
She lived most of her life in Buchanan and Niles, moving to Granger, Ind. in 1989.
She worked as a machine operator at Washburn Company and Simplicity Pattern Company and in housekeeping at Pawating Hospital, all in Niles.
She retired from Pawating Hospital in 1983.
She enjoyed excellent health, the product of a careful and healthy lifestyle.
She was known for her petite size, her independent nature, as a hard worker and for her love of dancing, especially the polka.
She was a frequent patron of the American Legion Post No. 357 in South Bend, Ind.
She was intentionally optimistic, merry and not known to complain. Her loved ones and many friends will miss her cheer and zest for life.
She is survived by her long-time friend, Donald Frush of Granger; granddaughters, Lorleila L. (David) Bartlett of Fayetteville, N.C., Luann (Donald) Meador Keller of Greer, S.C., Rhonda (Kenneth) Spaulding of South Bend, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Amanda, Garrick and Aliza Bartlett, Kari, RaeLee and Alexis Keller, Gibson, Truman and Ella Spaulding; a brother, Clyde (Gerry) Weaver of Buchanan and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Rae Meador-Newsom, who died on Dec. 3, 2006; a son-in-law, Ronald K. Meador, who died on March 18, 1995; two sisters, Vivian Price and Dean Wales and a brother, Doyle Weaver.
