BATH – On the final round of the 2009 PGA Junior Series event at Eagle Eye Golf Club in Bath, Mich. juniors experienced a tournament condition golf course and great competition.
Colton Wiggins from Indiana, Pa. won the Boy's 13-15 Division after shooting a 74 for a two day total of 147. This is Wiggin's first win on the PGA Junior Series and looks forward to more opportunities this summer to play well as he is scheduled to play the rest of the series schedule.
"I doubled the third hole which was not positive," said Wiggins. "However, I made some great recoveries the rest of the front nine and got into a nice rhythm that I kept the rest of the way."
Wiggins was able to pull away from the pack with his solid play to win by six strokes. Kee-Socrates Fryxell from Davenport, Iowa shot another solid round to come in second place with a two-day total of 153 while Brandon Barrows from Lake Orion came in third on a match of cards.
Daniel Stringfellow from Roselle, Ill. cruised to the Boy's 16-18 Division win by shooting a 69 on the final round for a two-day total of 136.
That two-day total of eight under par is the lowest winning score for the summer on the PGA Junior Series. Stringfellow was consistent all day, shooting at every flag and making important birdie putts.
Stringfellow won by seven over Blake English from Charlotte, who shot a two day total of 143. The third place winner was Brian Burt from Diamondale. With his outstanding victory Stringfellow is now able to play at the 2009 Junior PGA Championship later this summer.
In the Girl's 16-18 Division, Devon Compton from Rochester was able to come from one stroke down after day one to win by three over Shelby Phillips from Gilbert, Ariz. Compton played a consistent game throughout the day shooting a 74, two better than yesterday carding a two day total of 150.
"I would like to thank the Eagle Eye golf staff for a great course and the PGA staff for a great tournament," said Compton, who earned a right to play at the 2009 Junior PGA Championship later this summer at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
Last weeks winner in Illinois Shelby Phillips struggled today but was still able to finish strong for a solid second place finish, making it her third top 10 of the summer on the PGA Junior Series.
Paired with Compton and Phillips, Gabrielle Yurik from Oakland shot a 76 for a two-day total of 152 to finish in first place in the Girl's 13-15 Division. Despite the age difference, Yurik was able to hold her own today and fell just two shots short of winning the overall girl's title.
Sierra Everson from Gahanna, Ohio came in second place with a two day total of 161 while Christina Paulson from Ridgewood, N.J. rounded out the top three with a total score of 180.
The PGA Junior Series heads to Penn State University next week to host their sixth tournament of the summer and features one of our deepest fields so far this summer.
With a field of over 160 juniors from across the country, the three-day tournament that starts on June 30, 2009, should have great golf and competition.
