The shooting and robbery of an 80-year-old Niles man sent area police on a search for those responsible and resulted in a handful of arrests, just over the state line in South Bend Ind.
Though requests made to the Michigan State Police for information by the Niles Daily Star were refused, reports were made over the weekend that the Niles victim told police that he was approached by suspects claiming trouble with their car as he was out in his yard, at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 20.
Reports say that's when the victim claims the suspects shot him in the leg, took him into this home and took his wallet.
Reports also claim that the victim told police the suspects disconnected his phone and shot at him a second time, though he was not struck by a second bullet.
Phone calls to the South Bend Police Department were not returned by deadline – but the latest reports state up to six people involved in the incident were arrested in the matter. The victims credit cards were allegedly used in multiple South Bend stores which helped police track the suspects to their car and to a residence where they were apprehended by police.
The investigation into the incident and a possibility of involvement by the suspects in other home invasions in the area appears to be ongoing.
