The Niles Garden Club held their June meeting at the home of Lyn Butus with a salad luncheon. Everyone brought a salad and ate off of butterfly plates to match the theme of the day. Lyn's house is on the St. Joseph River with flowers all around the house that are animal friendly to the area. After everyone ate their fill the business meeting followed.
Everyone was encouraged to work in the Welcome to Niles Garden this week and to sign up for a week during the summer to keep the park beautiful for people entering Niles. A report was made on the bulb sale and a thanks to all who worked on it. A report was made on the State Convention in Kalamazoo. The Niles Garden Club won the Golden Apple Award for their flower show for public building. Wendie Stephenson updated the list of committees before she makes a new program book.
After the business meeting, Lyn gave a brief talk about all the flowers, bushes and trees in her yard with backup from all her gardening books. She also pointed out the turtle beds where the turtles crawled all the way up her bank from the river to make the nests in the middle of her flower beds. The raccoons found a few of the nests and dug up the eggs which were surprisingly good size.
Their next meeting will be held at the Welcome to Niles garden at 12:30 p.m. on July 7 with a tea party, including gardening hats.
