Richard Thompson Fox, 73, of Dowagiac, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Rose Arbor, Kalamazoo.
He was born Dec. 12, 1935, in Dowagiac to Birdene and Giffard Fox, who preceded him in death, as well as a niece, Jodi Barker.
He is survived by two brothers, Doyle (Shirley) Fox of Niles and Douglas (Mary Lou) Fox and one sister Jane (Donald) Fritz, both of Portage, several nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
Richard never met anyone who he didn't offer to help if needed.
He was an avid gardener, winning an award from the Town and Country Garden Club of Dowagiac, and instrumental in beautification of his street as well as the islands along Main Street in Dowagiac for several years.
He participated in Steve's run every year, doing what was asked of him.
Richard served in the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving an honorable discharge.
After the service, he attended technical school in Chicago and became an industrial meter repairman, retiring in 1998 after 32 years with Semco Gas Co.
After his retirement he enjoyed long rides, visiting friends out of town and especially family gatherings. He enjoyed cooking and always prepared Christmas dinner for family members.
Many who live in Dowagiac will remember Richard from being an attendant at the compost site for the City of Dowagiac the past several years.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 889 of Dowagiac and a regular at Monday night cards there. He also enjoyed playing cards every Thursday afternoon with a group of friends. He will be sorely missed by everyone.
In accordance with Richard's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, May 16, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 521 E. Main St. Niles, with his friend David Martin officiating.
Friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the service.
In keeping with Richard's wishes and his love for animals, especially dogs, memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Animal Shelter, 323 North M-62, Cassopolis, MI 49031.
