BUCHANAN – The Dowagiac junior varsity soccer team picked up its first win of the season on Friday against host Buchanan.
The Chieftains (1-1-3) defeated the Lady Bucks 3-1.
"The girls finely attacked the goal, the way I knew they could, running through the ball," Dowagiac coach Craig Black said. "Buchanan packed the box making it hard to score, so in the second half we ran our angles and put the ball across the goal, which led to our success."
Dowagiac, despite outshooting Buchanan 10-3 in the opening half, trailed 1-0 at the intermission after Alejandra Guerrero scored in the 25th minute.
The Chieftains regrouped at halftime and came out firing.
Andi Wade knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal in the 40th minute, while Kelsey Bannow got the game-winning in the 59th minute off an assist by Wade.
Bre Williams capped the scoring in the 68th minute with an unassisted goal.
Dowagiac, which is back in action today at 4 p.m. against visiting Allegan, finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots on goal.
