Not wasting any time, the city is making progress as part of its role as one of four communities taking part in a pilot program through the state in developing a Cultural Economic Development plan.
Members of the community met in February to discuss ways of defining and developing the culture of the Niles with visiting planning consultant Craig Dreeszen and put together a steering committee to create economic development by identifying different opportunities and assets within the city.
The second step in the process, Dreeszen said back in February, was to conduct a survey of the public's opinion.
"This opportunity gives us the chance to make real and true change in our community – strengthening both our local economy and our quality of life through Cultural Economic Development," said Main Street's Lisa Croteau.
"This next step is designed to gather information. We'd like for you to be a part of this process, as your opinions and advice are very important."
The survey was made available in various locations and would be sent out to residents who receive city utility bills.
But it is also being made available online.

The program is an initiative of the Main Street Program of the Michigan State Department of History, Arts and Libraries and the Historic Preservation Office with funding from the United States Department of Interior, National Park Service.
