Community Outreach at Lakeland HealthCare and the Safe Kids chapter of Berrien County are teaming up with the Michigan State Police and the Berrien County Sheriff's Department to offer a free child safety event on Saturday, March 7, at Tyler Automotive, located at 1810 M-51 South (at the intersection of M-51 and U.S. Hwy. 12) in Niles.
From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., car seat and booster seat safety checks will be provided. Because four out of five car seats checked nationally are used incorrectly or are unsafe, parents are encouraged to bring their children in their car seats or booster seats to have them checked by a certified child passenger safety specialist.
Last year, new legislation took effect in Michigan that requires children to use a booster seat until they are eight years old or 4'9" tall, depending on which requirement they reach first. This new law includes older children who are not optimally protected by seat belts alone.
