CASSOPOLIS – There are an estimated 39 million television sets in the United States which will need a conversion box in the near future to operate properly.
In an effort to keep as many television sets as possible out of landfills, the Southwest Michigan Solid Waste Consortium – which includes Cass County Commissioners Robert Ziliak, R-Niles, and Charlie Arnold, R-Cassopolis, and Cass County Extension Director Dan Rajzer – is sponsoring an electronic waste collection Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cass County Fairgrounds in Cassopolis.
This will be a user fee-based program, with the cost to drop off a TV being $12 for any size.
Computer monitors will be charged at $3.
All other small appliances, such as microwaves, irons, toasters ovens and stereos, can be disposed of for free. The recycling company the consortium is working with will not accept any appliance containing refrigerant, such as air conditioners or refrigerators, Arnold said Thursday night.
Large appliances, such as washing machines and dryers, also will not be accepted, Arnold said.
