He played three seasons for the Spartan basketball team under Coach Gus Ganakas, earning two letters in 1971 and '72. A strong defender and rugged front-court player, his most productive season came in 1970-71, when he averaged 4.5 points, while shooting 61.7 percent from the field, and 2.9 rebounds.
A right-handed pitcher for Coach Danny Litwhiler in 1971-72, Van Pelt compiled a 4-3 career record with 94 strikeouts and a 2.10 ERA in 64.1 career innings. In limited time at the plate, he hit .220 with two home runs and eight RBI.
