ALLEGAN – After the first eight minutes of Monday night's Wolverine Conference contest between host Allegan and the Dowagiac girls' varsity basketball team, there was no doubt about who was going to win.
The Chieftains turned a 10-6 advantage after the first eight minutes into a 13-point (29-16) halftime advantage.
Then came the third quarter.
Dowagiac exploded for 21 points and went on to defeat the Lady Tigers 52-38 to pick up its sixth win of the season. It also avenged a loss to Allegan just a few weeks ago.
The Chieftains took advantage of a problem Allegan has had all season long and that's now coming out of the locker room after halftime and playing well in the third quarter.
Dowagiac (6-11, 6-9 Wolverine) outscored the Lady Tigers 21-12 in the third quarter to open up a 40-22 lead heading to the final stanza.
Dowagiac coasted home from there.
Torie Lowe led the Chieftains with a game-high 20 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Marcie Ennesser had a career-high 10 points for Dowagiac, which also got seven points and three steals from Tasia Diaz and six points each from Kayleigh Hutchings and Britnee Allerton.
Hutchings and Allerton combined for 13 rebounds.
Marisa Cochran and Jasmine Wright scored 17 and 12 points respectively for the Lady Tigers, who fall to 4-13 overall and 4-11 in league play.
The Dowagiac freshmen basketball team defeated Allegan on Monday night 35-14.
Jacoya Brookins led the Chieftains with 11 points, while Regina Kennedy and Carly Polomcak added nine and eight points respectively.
Erica Greenwood led the team with 10 rebounds.
On Friday night, Dowagiac lost to Plainwell 43-19.
Polomcak had seven points and Brookins five. Alyssa Groth added four.
The Chieftains' junior varsity squad dropped a 14-13 decision to Allegan on Monday.
Kiele Belew had six points for Dowagiac, which also got five points from Kelsie Primley.
The Chieftains are back in action on Thursday night as they host undefeated Wolverine Conference leader Gull Lake.
The freshmen game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. with the junior varsity and varsity to follow at 5:45 and 7:15.
