Kathryn Wray, 87, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Dowagiac, passed in her sleep on Jan. 22, 2009, in her daughter's home in Largo, Fla.
Kay, as she was known to friends and family, was a teacher for Dowagiac Union Schools.
She also worked for the American Red Cross in Dowagiac.
She was a graduate of Western Michigan University with a master's degree in education.
She also attended Kalamazoo College and Albion College before moving to Detroit, where she worked as a social worker in the Juvenile Division of the Detroit Police Department, where she met her late husband William C. "Bill" Wray, former Chief of Police in Dowagiac.
Kay taught school at Lake LaGrange School, Justus Gage Elementary and Dowagiac Junior High up until retirement.
She is survived by: a sister, Helen Jewett of Flint, Mich.; a sister-in-law, Beverly Turner of Decatur; a son, Kenneth (Sherry L.) Wray of Dowagiac, Edwardsburg chief of police; granddaughters, Dawn Wray of Dowagiac, Nora Wray of Lea, Minn., Susan Wray of South Bend, Ind., Danielle Wray (Carlson) of Kalamazoo, Kendra Pope of Edwardsburg, Tiffany Pope of Dowagiac and Cody Wray of Dowagiac; a daughter, Connie Pliss (Wray) of Largo, Fla., and her husband, Wayne Pliss; Jon Goodwin of St. Petersburg, Aaron Goodwin of Florida, Danielle Pliss of Largo and Noah Pliss of Largo, Fla.
Funeral arrangements and services will be announced at a later date.
