ROYAL OAK – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Albion College guard Claire Cannon its Player of the Week in women's basketball.
Cannon, a freshman from Clinton Township (Chippewa Valley HS), provided a spark off the bench for the Britons in a pair of conference wins last week.
She scored 11 points, including three 3-point baskets, and handed out four assists as Albion handed Saint Mary's its first league loss, 77-72, and connected on four 3-pointers for 12 points in a 68-38 win over Kalamazoo.
For the week, Cannon was 7-of-13 from 3-point range, dished out seven assists and grabbed seven rebounds. She is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
The MIAA has named Calvin College center John Mantel its Player of the Week in men's basketball.
Mantel, a junior from Chelsea (Chelsea HS), had back-to-back double-doubles in leading the Knights to a pair of road victories last week that moved Calvin into sole possession of first place in the MIAA.
He scored 12 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out four assists in 22 minutes in an 87-56 win over Adrian. He then added 17 points, including the go-ahead free throws with a little more than a minute remaining, and 11 rebounds in 32 minutes in leading the Knights to a 66-64 victory over Hope. It's the second time this season Mantel is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week.
