SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Niles varsity wrestling team finished 2-3 in Pool B at the Northern Indiana Conference Super Duals on Saturday.
The Vikings were making their first trip to the tournament and were greeted rudely by No. 1 ranked Mishawaka (Ind.).
Niles fell to the Caveman 62-0. The Vikings also lost to South Bend Riley 46-18 and to Elkhart (Ind.) Central 40-16.
"It's hard to say you wrestled well when you go 2-3, but look at who we wrestled," Niles coach Todd Hesson said. "Even with the Mishawaka one, we didn't just roll over. The kids battled."
Niles did finish off on a high note by winning its final two matches.
The Vikings defeated South Bend Washington 56-15 and then Mishawaka Marian 64-12.
Mishawaka and No. 18 ranked Penn both went 5-0 on the day to capture their respective pools.
The Cavemen had 10 individual champions, while Penn finished with 12 individual champions.
Nate Allison went 4-1 on the day and collected his 100th career victory.
Eric Long and McCade Reese were both 3-2, while Hesson also singled out Gage Pearison and Colin Burandt for their efforts.
"We had some other kids who are not normally varsity wrestlers that we threw in there and they did a nice job," Hesson said.
They included Chris Powell, Rashad Harris and Robbie Legus.
Niles will host South Bend (Ind.) Riley on Tuesday night beginning at 6 p.m.
