‘A remarkable list’ of Cass County government accomplishments for 2008

Obtained regional funds to hire Robert Smith as regional planning for emergency management/homeland security to complete inventories of local fire departments.
SCORE (which stood for Service Corps of Retired Executives) expanded into Cass County and was welcomed by the Economic Development Corp. and by the Board of Commissioners.
Maintenance installed energy-efficient lighting in the Cass County Building and in the Health Department building.
Gave authority to proceed with the Lakes Area Sewer project in the northeast part of the county around Marcellus.
Rebuilt the lift station in the jail.
Launched the new Cass County Web site, where on Thursday visitors could learn about becoming a school board candidate. Any person interested in becoming a candidate for their local school board, such as Dowagiac, must file an Affidavit of Identity and nominating petitions at Cass County Clerk-Register Barbara Wilson's office in the 1899 courthouse at 120 N. Broadway, Cassopolis, by 4 p.m. on Feb. 10. A $100 non-refundable fee may be filed in lieu of a petition for the May 5 election; (269) 445-4464.
Traded Curtis Lake lots for title to Dodd Park in Pokagon Township.
Created an ad hoc parks committee, then formed a new Parks and Recreation Commission effective Oct. 1.
Replaced the Cass County Building telephone system.
Replaced the Newton House roof.
Completed the schedule of locally-set fees and charges, thanks to Treasurer Linda Irwin.
Selected a new auditor, Abraham and Gaffney.
Repaired masonry at the Sheriff's Office/jail.
Returned prepaid health insurance premiums to employees/employers.
Purchased office furniture for the Treasurer's Office.
Established the Land Bank Authority.
Funded an intern with Cass District Library to digitize historical photos and documents.
"This was a very productive year, despite having a very tight budget and challenges at the state and national levels," County Administrator Terry Proctor said.
