LANSING – Sen. Ron Jelinek Thursday honored members of the Cassopolis FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team with a special presentation and tribute on the floor of the Michigan Senate.
The team was first runner-up at the National FFA Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Event held in October at the group's national convention. It was the first time a Michigan team made it to the final four.
Additionally, team member Tiffany Rogers was named best chairperson of the event.
Other team members include Kayla Green, Meg Hein, Kyle Miller, Ryan Stover and R.J. Lee.
"This is a significant achievement for the students and they should be extremely proud of themselves," said Jelinek, R-Three Oaks. "It is exciting for our community to be represented by some of the best stewards of parliamentary procedure in the country. It is with great honor that I present them with this tribute to recognize their accomplishments."
The Parliamentary Procedure event tests students' ability to effectively communicate ideas during a meeting.
Components include a general knowledge exam of parliamentary law, a 10- minute demonstration of parliamentary procedure, oral questions and written minutes of the demonstration.
Each team competed against 41 other chapters from across the nation. The National FFA Organization is a youth association that prepares students for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture.
"FFA plays an important role in helping shape the lives of students, from community involvement, to leadership to career choices," Jelinek said.
"Making history at the national level adds another great line to their resumes and will help open doors for future opportunities."
