Niles opens season with win

BATTLE CREEK – A big third quarter helped the Niles girls' varsity basketball team made coach Pat Touhey's debut a success.
The Lady Vikings outscored host Battle Creek Lakeview 23-10 in the third quarter to help erase a four-point halftime deficit and lift Niles to a 53-39 Big 16 Conference non-divisional contest Tuesday night.
Trailing 17-11 after one period of play, the Lady Vikings held Lakeview to just 22 points over the final three quarters to open the season with a victory.
Niles held an 8-6 advantage on the scoreboard in the second quarter to cut the deficit to four points by intermission.
After blowing out Lakeview in the third quarter, Niles outscored the Lady Trojans 13-6 in the final eight minutes to pull away to the easy victory.
Senior guard Lindsay Craig had a big night for the Lady Vikings as she poured in 17 points, including four 3-pointers.
Niles also got 14 points on the inside from Basia Cox and seven points from Nicole Sly. Sly also had seven rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Niles also won the freshmen and junior varsity contests on Tuesday night.
The Lady Vikings took the freshman game 38-28 as Michelle Briand scored 14 points.
The Niles junior varsity, led by Alex McIntee's 10 points, defeated Lakeview 39-27.
The Lady Vikings are back in action on Friday night as they host Battle Creek Central in another non-divisional contest.
