High school seniors and their parents learned about Southwestern Michigan College's new student housing at the Dowagiac campus during an information session Nov. 19.
Most importantly, participants learned that there were only 50 beds remaining for fall 2009, when the residential housing is slated to open.
The three-story building features four-bedroom suites which come fully furnished, including all appliances.
"The response has been overwhelming to our on-campus housing," said SMC President Dr. David Mathews. "Students are excited about being able to have the total college experience, including residential life at SMC, and parents are excited about SMC's low tuition."
The group heard from SMC staff about the amenities of the 130-bed student housing and the 21,216-square-foot expansion of the Student Activity Center, as well as what parents should know about college and on-campus living at SMC.
In addition, parents learned that SMC is among the safest college campuses in the nation, with no reported violent crimes, weapons violations or assaults for the period of 2004 and 2006.
Nationally, SMC's student success rate is ranked in the top 10 percent with other community colleges in the country for student course success.
SMC has been accepting housing applications for 60 days.
