CASSOPOLIS – Lee Moorman Weatherspoon, 94, of Vandalia, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at his son Vincent's home in Jackson, Mich., after an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 8, 1913, in Cairo, Ill., the son of the late Joseph D. and Bettie (Branham) Weatherspoon.
He came to this area in 1946 from South Bend, Ind.
Lee married the former Gladys A. Steele on June 14, 1942, in Cass County's Calvin Township.
His wife survives, along with: nine children, Donald B. (Christine) Weatherspoon of Haslett, Anthony K. (Lola) Weatherspoon of Lansing, Andrea K. (James) McAdams of Lanham, Md., Gregory D. (Vivian) Weatherspoon of Vandalia, Brenda F. Presbury of Upper Marlboro, Md., Denise A. (Donald Sr.) Payne of Blacklick, Ohio, Vincent J. (Dolletta) Weatherspoon of Jackson, Arna O. Livingston of Green Belt, Md., and Dave D. (Lorraine) Weatherspoon of Williamston; 30 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys L. Bigham of South Bend, Ind.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and three brothers.
Lee was a retired co-broker with Weatherspoon Realty in Cassopolis.
He was a member of the Vandalia Church of God, the NAACP, Granite Lodge 11, F&AM, Peninsular Consistory, and was a 33rd-degree Mason.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Sam Adams Elementary School gymnasium in Cassopolis.
Officiating will be his pastor, the Rev. John H. Anderson Jr.
Interment will be in Chain Lake Cemetery, Calvin Township.
Military graveside honors will be given by members of Efton James American Legion Post 206 and William E. Lozier VFW Post 10704, both of Cassopolis.
His family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
