United Way announces local grants

NILES – The United Way of Greater Niles has announced the following 2008-2009 grants to local charities:
American Red Cross, General Support $9,000
Berrien County Cancer Service, Free Home Nursing Services, $22,000
Berrien County Council for Children, Abused Children's Assessment Center, $12,000
Big Brothers Big Sisters, Youth Mentoring Programs, $18,000
Boy Scouts of LaSalle Council, Youth Development, $1,000
Child &Family Services, Link Crisis Center and Guardianship Services, $6,500
Christian Service Center, Food Pantry, $3,000
Girl Scouts of Singing Sands, Youth Development, $1,000
Niles Association for Exceptional Citizens, Recreational Programs for Mentally and Physically Disadvantaged, TBA
Multicultural Involvement, "Fresh Start" Program, $7,000
Safe Shelter, Domestic Violence, $20,000
Northside Childcare, Subsidized Child Care, $4,000
Salvation Army, Utility Assistance, Rent Assistance, Soup Kitchen, Emergency Lodging, $40,500
Samaritan Center, Counseling Fee Subsidies, $3,000
Volunteer Center of SW MI, Volunteer Mobilization, $8,000
Niles-Buchanan YMCA, Membership &Program Scholarship Assistance Program, Niles/Brandywine Water Safety Program $22,000
Funding decisions are made by local volunteers on the Fund Distribution Committee and the Board of Directors.

Donations are used to help fund local non-profit agencies that provide services in the greater Niles area. More than $11 million has been raised for local charities by the United Way of Greater Niles since its founding in 1953.
