George William Monaghan, of Barber Street, Edwardsburg, died at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at his home, after an illness.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Edwardsburg, with the Rev. Joe McCormick, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in Edwardsburg Cemetery.
He was born on March 6, 1923, in Grosse Point, to George Monaghan, Sr. and Delia Delmore Monaghan.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was the principal for Northport Michigan School and Edwardsburg Jr./Sr. High School.
He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Michigan State.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Edwardsburg. He enjoyed tutoring readers at Edwardsburg Schools and Gulf Shores schools in Alabama.
He delivered Meals on Wheels and also volunteered at the Edwardsburg Food Pantry.
On Feb. 18, 1950, in Detroit, he married Therese Schumacher, who died Jan. 24, 2008.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, John and Jim and sisters, Rose Crow, Elizabeth Conlan, Ann O'Sullivan and Therese Monaghan.
Surviving family includes three sons, John (Sue) Monaghan of Cassopolis, Tim (Jean) Monaghan of Edwardsburg and Bill (Heidi) Monaghan of Bloomington, Ind.; three daughters, Cathy (Frank) Imbrie of Rockaway Beach, Or., Peg (Dan) Shannon of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Maura (John) Wieczorek of Edwardsburg; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
