Hildreth Josephine Pifer, 96, of Satsuma, Fla. and formerly of Niles, died on Wednesday morning, Aug. 6, 2008, at her home.
A memorial service will celebrate her life at the graveside in Arlington Cemetery in Bangor, on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 3 p.m. The Rev. Jeff Reese of Hope United Methodist Church in Edwardsburg will officiate.
She was born on Oct. 14, 1911, in Bangor, the daughter of the late Raymond and Hazel (Wright) Morton.
She graduated from Bangor High School and entered nursing school at the "New Borgess School of Nursing" in Kalamazoo and became a R.N.
She married the sweetheart of her life, William Nicholas Pifer on Jan. 27, 1943. Bill died on Aug. 11, 1989.
Surviving family includes two daughters, Jane (Jerry) Gaughran of Prescott, Ariz. and Patricia (Bill) Baxter of Satsuma, Fla.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Hildreth and her husband Bill were the founders and owners of the Pifer Funeral Home in Niles from 1935 to 1973. She and her husband were also instrumental in helping to start the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home in Edwardsburg, which is owned by Paul and Betty Mayhew.
