Doreen Marie "Dodie" Forslund, 79, of Edwardsburg, and formerly of Chicago, Ill. and Las Vegas, Nev., died on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008, while a patient at The Milton House of South Bend, Ind.
Cremation of her remains are entrusted to the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
She was born on May 13, 1929, to Gustave E. Forslund and Ava Marie "Tootsie" Hegg Forslund in Chicago, Ill.
Known as "Dodie" to her close friends and family, she was a graduate of St. Gregory's High School in Chicago, Ill, as well as Michigan State University, where she majored in art and physical education.
She played women's professional softball while in college, as well as after, both for Buffalo, N.Y. and Chicago teams.
Part of her younger years were spent as a teacher in Romulus, and in Chicago, while her remaining career was working at Cook County hospital, Chicago, as the gregarious and sensitive recreational director, as well as a labor relations hearing officer.
She also coached the hospital's School of Nursing women's softball team to two championships while there. She was the only woman coach out of eight hospital teams represented.
She retired in 1989 to move to Las Vegas, Nev., where she spent at least 15 years before becoming ill. At that time she moved to Edwardsburg to live with her dearest friends and caregivers, Donna Robinson and Kay Conlon.
She was a wonderful artist who could work in any medium. She exhibited her work at both the Gold Coast and Old Town art fairs in Chicago.
Being an only child, she is survived by many wonderful friends who live throughout the country. She was loved and will be missed dearly by all of them.
