5:30 p.m. – WAND (Women's Action for New Directions) will provide a free screening of the film "A Crude Awakening: The Oil Crash" at Cass District Library in Cassopolis. In this documentary, a well-credentialed panel tries to answer the question, "When is the oil going to run out and what's going to happen when it does?" Free popcorn and lemonade. All are invited.
7 p.m. – Dowagiac City Council meets at City Hall, 241 S. Front St. According to the agenda, Fourth District Judge candidate Dale Blunier of Edwardsburg will address the council, which will also give formal approval to the 18th annual Rod and Roll Classic Auto Show next month. The council will confirm two appointments recommended by Mayor Don Lyons: Lavance Henry to the Citizens Advisory Board to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Richard Sifford; term expires December 2009; and reappointing Joann Ausra to the Board of Review; term expires December 2010. Resolutions before the council for consideration include: approving a contract with the Domestic Assault Shelter Coalition; approving modifications to the Michigan Employees' Retirement System (MERS) defined contribution program; setting public hearings for Monday, Aug. 11, at 7 p.m. to declare properties at 203 Andrews St., 403 Jefferson St. and 317 McOmber St. public nuisances; amendments to the FY 2007-2008 budget through July 17; and paying out $301,270.43, including $179,509.97 for bills and $121,760.46 for payroll; bills owed to Laylin Welding total $335.50. The council will also give second reading to an ordinance amending Chapter 38, Environment; Article II, Nuisances; Division 3, Blight, of the Dowagiac City Code.
Tuesday, July 29
7 p.m. – Republican candidate forum until 8:30 for the 78th state House District at Lake Michigan College's Bertrand Crossing Campus on Mayflower Road. Participating candidates include Bill Baber of Berrien Springs, Gary Campbell of Baroda, Bruce Hipshear of Buchanan and Sharon Tyler of Niles. There will be another opportunity to see the GOP candidates for Neal Nitz's job as Dowagiac's voice in the state House: 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, at the Acorn Theatre, 107 Generations Drive, Three Oaks, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Berrien and Cass counties.
