Homes invaded in Niles Twp.

On Monday, July 14, the Berrien County Sheriff's Office ( Niles Township patrol ) handled two separate daytime home invasions off Morris Drive in Niles Township where firearms, electronics, liquor and U.S. Currency were stolen, Det. Lt. David Chandler reported.
Information received from the Buchanan City Police Department directed sheriff's detectives to an individual from the Niles Township area who possibility had information on the home invasions.
During a series of interviews, information was developed that led detectives to the South Bend, Ind., area to the location of several suspects and location of some of the stolen property.
A search warrant was drafted in St. Joseph County, Ind., for a location at 25419 State Road 2, The Royal Inn.
One subject was arrested inside a motel room, and various items from the Michigan home invasions and from home burglaries in Indiana were recovered.
Recovered from the Niles Township home invasions were long guns, electronics and liquor.
Arrested and transported back to Michigan, after waiving voluntary extradition on various felony charges was Edwin Dewayne Brooks, 36, of 909 N. Diamond St., South Bend.
Brooks faces a variety of charges, including two outstanding felony warrants from Berrien County for receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle and possession of a motor vehicle with an altered VIN.
This stems from last week, when Brooks was in Niles Township and was stopped by the Berrien County Sheriff, Niles Township Patrol.
The vehicle Brooks was driving, was later discovered by SCAR investigators stolen from Mishawaka, Ind.
Additional charges include: 1.) home invasion in the first degree; 2.) home invasion in the second degree; 3.) possession of stolen firearms; 4.) felon in possession of firearms.
Brooks has a lengthy criminal record with felony convictions.
Brooks will be arraigned today on the felony warrants. The additional charges will be brought to the Berrien County Prosecutors office later today.
Assisting agencies included Buchanan City Police Department and detectives and officers from the St. Joseph County Police in Indiana.
This investigation is continuing by both St. Joe County Police and Berrien County Sheriff's Office detectives.
