Lillie "Marie" (Noel) Newman, 86, of Niles, died on Wednesday July 9, 2008, surrounded by her children and family following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held on Monday July 14, at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior.
An interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
She was born on March 2, 1922, in Caruthersville, Mo. to the late Walter and Nancy Jane (Mathenia) Noel.
On June 8, 1942, she married Donald C. Newman, Sr. at a ceremony in Jefferson City, Mo. As a young bride Marie took employment, as most women needed to do during the war, as a ship welder in California. As the couple started a family they moved to the Niles area where they established their businesses.
She was also a graduate of Vogue Beauty Academy. Together with her husband they owned and operated Newman Auto Sales and Newman's Fruit and Produce Market, both on South 11th Street in Niles.
She also retired from Newman Family Investment Corporation in 2000, where she was a member, serving on the Board of Directors for many years. Whenever possible, her free time was spent working in her flower gardens and always enjoyed watching her grandchildren's activities. Many will remember fondly her sense of humor and wit that kept everyone smiling.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Don in 1982, two brothers, James and Earnest Noel and a sister, Mary Babb.
She is survived by two daughters, Betty (Donald) Shively of Jones and Lynda (Dennis) Daley of Ankeny, Iowa; a son, Don Jr. (Dodi) Newman of Niles; eight grandchildren; Tonya (Tony) Stella of Niles, Bryon (Kim) Shively of Niles, Mark (Amy) Shively of Niles, Aaron and Brent Newman of Niles, Paul (Gail) Daley of Osceola, Ind., Denise (Brandon) Chapman of Ankeny, Iowa and Donny Daley of Grand Rapids and 12 great-grandchildren.
In keeping with her wishes and strong convictions for her grandchildren to further their education, memorial contributions can be gifted to the Marie Newman Scholarship Fund, 306 E. Main Street, Niles, MI 49120, in which an educational fund has been established in her honor.
Condolences, photos and memories may be left for the family at www.brownfuneralhomeniles.com.
