To the editor:
On this 232nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we celebrate our nation's birth. When the Founding Fathers signed their names to this sacred document, they pledged their lives, fortunes and property to each other for a noble cause that few could have imagined would lead to the extraordinary democracy we live in today. We dissolved ties with England, declared independence and established the United States of America. To achieve all of this, our fellow countrymen back then fought a bloody Revolutionary War and against all odds ushered in a new age of freedom unlike any other in the world.
Since then, we have experienced great growth, weathered challenges and celebrated triumphs. Generation after generation has reaffirmed the phrase "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights."
Today, here in Southwest Michigan we stand on the shoulders of these American heroes. Their vision, fortitude and ingenuity not only established our country as a place of diversity and opportunity, but one where people could be respected and achieve what we have come to know today as the American dream. In this time of extreme economic and social difficulties, we must not forget the hallmark of good citizenship. As we participate in July 4th events, let us remember to show concern, compassion and support for our fellow man.
Together, as a unified people, we can overcome partisanship that threatens our communal progress and seek compromises and accommodations to build an economy that brings back our disappearing middle class and a secure and exciting future for all. God bless our country, community and the great State of Michigan.
With every best wish for a memorable and meaningful holiday.
