NILES – A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. tonight in loving memory of Niles firefighter Vincent D. Dixon who passed away Sunday, June 22.
The Berrien County Sheriff's Department reports that at approximately 5:22 a.m. Sunday, Deputy Terry Ellis responded to the report of an overturned vehicle at Copp Road and Stone Creek Road.
There, Deputy Ellis found an Oldsmobile Silhouette Van resting on its passenger's side off the shoulder. Deputy Aaron Nannfeldt who assisted with the accident reported it appeared that Dixon's vehicle ran off the roadway towards the right and then overturned -causing the fatality. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Dixon, 22, was the only occupant of the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was a resident of Cassopolis and a volunteer firefighter with the Niles City Fire Department.
Tonight's vigil will take place outside the Niles City Fire Department, 1345 E. Main St., in front of Silverbrook Cemetery.
Chris Thornhill and Danielle Batey invite anyone whom Vince had touched to join them in remembering his life. Candles were donated by Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, Walgreen's and St. Mark Catholic Church.
