NILES – A memorial is set up outside the Niles City Fire Department for volunteer firefighter Vincent Dixon, 22. Dixon lost his life Sunday, near Copp Road and Stone Creek Drive in Bertrand Township, according to the Berrien County Sheriff's Department.
Niles City Fire Department Chief Larry Lamb said Monday morning the department came together Sunday to support each other after news of Dixon's passing broke. "He was a close friend of all of us," said Lamb. "Some guys fight fires whether for profession or a hobby and some people are firefighters, meaning that's who and what they are, that's what they do, and he was the latter.
"We are all deeply saddened," he added. Lamb said the entire fire service family will come together to support Dixon's family.
Accident reconstructionists from the Sheriff's Department were on hand at the scene. Michigan State Police, Berrien County and Niles Township patrol and Bertrand Township assisted. More information was not available at press time.
