SODUS – One of the best ways to plan a trip this year to save on gas is to go log cabin hunting, according to Virginia Handy, secretary-treasurer of the Log Cabin Society of Michigan.
Whether a faraway trip is planned or one nearby, Log Cabin Day June 29 is a perfect way to see the state.
A whole new world can open up right in your own neighborhood thanks to Log Cabin Day.
For its 20th anniversary, the Log Cabin Society of Michigan is issuing a brochure with a map listing 100 places for Log Cabin Day June 29 where visitors can experience log cabin living or just enjoy driving down country lanes to state parks or other scenic places in Michigan.
Some places have musicians and crafts, such as the Cassopolis Pioneer Log Cabin on Stone Lake in Cass County.
Berrien County historic log cabins include the Murdock Log Hose in Berrien Springs and the log cabins at Mary's House of David.
Recently discovered in Benton Township is a 1940 log cabin on Ramona owned by Bruce Burke. It is off Territorial, just west of Southwest Michigan Regional Airport.
Among the 100 log cabins, some are for sale, including one at Grand Junction owned by Gary and Wendy Steudle, who also have another log cabin for open house where they now live in Van Buren County's South Haven Township.
Featured in Log Home Living in July 2006, they built it themselves from old logs.
Both of the Steudle cabins can be reached by taking the U.S. 20 exit off I-196; Phoenix Road (C.R. 388).
For the Grand Junction cabin, go 10 miles east to C.R. 215, south to Silver Lake Road, then to 08502 West Shore Drive.
To go to their log cabin home on Phoenix Road, turn east at Wal-Mart.
Take the first road to the right (south) to get to 08575 73rd St.
Nearby Fennville also has some log cabins listed, including the historic Dunningville Log Cabin at the Crane Cider Mill and Pie Pantry Restaurant and a Heritage log home built by dealers Theresa Wiley and Ed Snell.
