NILES – John K. Fountain, the former treasurer of the Niles-Buchanan Rotary Club who was convicted of embezzling $21,000 from the organization earlier this year was sentenced Monday by Berrien County Trial Judge Scott Schofield.
Fountain received a sentence of 30 days in jail, 60 days on home tether and two years of probation. In addition, he will incur a reported $2,820 in various costs and fines and serve 200 hours of community service.
Rotary President John Stauffer told the Star in March that the club's board of directors had discovered financial irregularities, which led to a meeting between the board and legal counsel. Fountain resigned on March 5.
The charge made against Fountain typically carries with it a term of 10 years in prison.
There was no restitution ordered in regards to the case, after the First Missionary Church in Niles reportedly paid for the money Fountain stole from the Rotary Club in 2006 and 2007, a total of over $21,500.
