To the editor:
As designer and co-chairperson of the Veteran's Memorial Committee I offer a special salute to Larry Clymer on behalf of all area veterans and active duty military personnel.
Few people know the "behind the scenes" input made by Larry in obtaining authorization for the current Riverfront site for the Veteran's Memorial … were it not for Larry's guidance, directing our stumbling committe through the challenges of convincing the city council that Riverfront Park was indeed the best location and preventing us from becoming discouraged by those who felt that the memorial should be placed elsewhere.
Larry always wanted to remain in the background. If not for Larry Clymer, visitors to the Niles Veteran's Memorial would be searching it out in some obscure location in Silverbrook Cemetery or risking their lives crossing South 11th street at Main trying to get to the triangle at the entrance to the city. I only knew Larry on a personal level since that time, but since then we have shared bean soup and corn bread on many occasions at the American Legion following Veteran's Day ceremonies. The American servicemen and women have lost a true friend in Larry Clymer.
