NILES – June Cary, one of Niles' most prominent and well known fine artists of the last half century, is featured in a one-woman show in the Eleanor &Mowitt Drew Gallery at the Niles District Library running through July 26.
Although Cary's body of work includes seascapes, beach scenes and still lifes, it is her garden-scapes that predominate. Created in an impressionistic style she loves to experiment with unusual color schemes and expressive layers of texture. The compositions are anchored by garden fixtures including fences, steps, paths, and buildings. June works from photographs she has taken from all over the world, often from public gardens such as Fernwood in Niles and Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel. She often pieces together many of her photographs to create original compositions to inspire her. She lets a painting happen, working fast to maintain the spontaneity.
During the summer Cary works in her studio at Diamond Lake in Cassopolis.
Cary holds a fine arts degree from Michigan State University and has continued graduate work at the Stuttgart Art Institute, Germany: the Toledo Art Museum; and the University of Notre Dame.
She has had more than 51-woman shows and been included in many group shows throughout Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Florida. Her pastels were featured in an article in the June 1998 issue of American Artist Magazine.
Cary's artwork has earned numerous awards and is in many public and private collections. The Niles District Library is honored to have two of her painting in their permanent art collection.
The Eleanor &Mowitt Drew Gallery is located in the library's rotunda. Exhibitions can be viewed during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
