ZEELAND – A record-breaking season ended no differently for Niles junior Baysia Cox.
She was the lone Viking to medal at the MHSAA Division II track and field state finals held in Zeeland on Saturday. Medals were awarded to the top eight placers in each event.
Cox placed eighth in the shot-put event, throwing a distance of 36-feet-1. Her throw of 35-9 earlier this season broke the school record.
She was initially seeded among the second flight of throwers, but earned a spot among the top competitors with her season and career-best toss.
Also competing for Niles at the state meet was Madie Rodts in the 800-meter run , Rodts, Gabie Ezell, Liz VandenHeede and Autumn Grayson in the 3,200-meter relay and David Davis in the pole vault event.
This was the second straight year that the relay team and Davis had competed in the state finals.
