CASSOPOLIS – District Judge Paul Deats Wednesday morning granted defense attorney Dale E. Blunier's motion for a forensic examination as to the competency of Elizabeth Marie Bosworth.
Bosworth is accused of murdering her husband's grandmother, which is punishable by up to life in prison.
The incident which resulted in the death of Margaret Bosworth, 85, occurred on or about May 17 at 20616 Grange St., Mason Township, near Edwardsburg.
The defendant, 31, of 1027 Carolyn Ave., Elkhart, Ind., was arrested in Elkhart May 17 and extradited to Michigan May 19.
Blunier, Bosworth's court-appointed attorney, stated in an affidavit May 28 that based on a conversation with the defendant, as well as speaking to jail staff and her mother, he doubts whether she can understand the charges against her.
"Also," Blunier stated, "Ms. Bosworth does not appear to be in proper mental state to assist me in her defense."
