Vikings put up big numbers against Benton Harbor

BENTON HARBOR – The Niles varsity baseball team put up some big numbers against host Benton Harbor in a Big 16 Conference West Division doubleheader on Tuesday.
The Vikings (22-7) defeated the Tigers 15-0 in five innings and 13-0 in four innings.
In earning the sweep, Niles banged out 13 doubles, a triple and a home run.
D.J. Wolnik went 4-for-4 with four doubles in the opening game, while Andrew Brawley was 3-for-3 with three doubles. Alex Welch went 2-for-2 with a double for the Vikings. Mikie Simpson and Asaad Ali (2-for-3) also had doubles.
Zach Bloss added a home run.
Jake Ferguson worked the first three innings and earned the victory. Taylor Robson came on in the fourth and completed the game.
The two combined to toss a two-hitter.
The second game featured three doubles and a triple.
Simpson was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple, while Ali and Kevin Gross both collected two-baggers.
Wolnik was 2-for-4 at the plate.
Simpson earned the victory as he pitched the first two innings before turning the ball over to Bloss for the final two innings.
The Vikings will return to the diamond on Saturday as they travel to St. Joseph for an invitational tournament.
