‘Light lunch’ policy upsets mother

To the Editor:
I wanted to let all the Brandywine parents know about the policy for all "light lunches."
My son always takes hot lunch, and I always send a check to put in his account. One day last month he did not have enough money in his account, which he was never told the day before that he was low. He had already prepared his lunch and the cashier then told him he did not have enough money so she made him get back out of line and get a light lunch which was two graham crackers, a side of peanut butter and a package of apples. And what hurts the most is that they THREW AWAY his lunch that he originally prepared. And he can't eat peanut butter so for lunch he ate some apples and milk. He was starving the rest of the day. So you think light lunch includes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but it doesn't, they told me that they were out that day.
I wouldn't have eaten that for lunch and why should any student be punished to eat it.This was my fault for not sending a check on that day but it was one day not months and I think the students should not be punished for something that is the parents responsibilities.
The schools are supposed to be focusing on making sure our students have everything they need in the classroom but the focus should also be on making sure the kid that wants to eat should be fed and don't go hungry so they can focus in the classroom the rest of the day. I just wanted to let all parents know that if a student gets a light lunch means they probably threw your child's lunch away and I think this needs to stop.
Again the students should not be punished for something their parents should be taking care of. Lets find a better solution for everybody!!
