LANSING – Legislation signed into law Friday allows cities and townships to authorize alternative dates for the required July or December board of review meetings, said bill sponsor Sen. Ron Jelinek, R-Three Oaks.
Public Act 122 of 2008 (Senate Bill 209) will help townships that share assessors ensure the assessors are able to attend all the local board of review meetings. It allows the local boards to meet any day during the week coinciding with the third Monday in July or during the week of the second Monday in December. Previously, they were limited to two specific days.
"Many townships and cities are trying to save money by sharing assessors, but the assessors couldn't get to all the meetings being held on the same day," Jelinek said. "Allowing them to meet on alternate days during a scheduled week will provide for more flexibility and cost savings."
The boards of review meet in July or December to correct "qualified errors" or hear appeals concerning certain exemptions.
