Michigan Nature Association is hosting a volunteer work day this Saturday, May 10, to remove invasive garlic mustard from its Dowagiac Woods Nature Sanctuary.
Dowagiac Woods is a virgin woodland rich in wildflowers on Frost Street in Pokagon Township. Work will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
MNA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the study of natural history, conservation education and protection of unique natural areas in Michigan.
Since 1952, MNA has acquired more than 160 nature sanctuaries throughout the state, from the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula to the Indiana border.
Please register with the MNA office in case the event needs to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.
Register by calling (517) 655-5655 or e-mail volunteer@michigannature.org.
To get to Dowagiac Woods, travel west from the city on M-62, turn south on Sink Road, then east onto Frost and look for the parking area and large sanctuary sign on the north side of the road.
MNA uses workdays such as the one May 10 to protect the ecology of its preserves by removing garlic mustard and other invasive species.
Besides loss of habitat, invasive species are the most significant cause of biodiversity loss worldwide.
