Mary E. Evans, 88, formerly of Cleveland Street, Dowagiac, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Friday, April 25 following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 2 at Franklin A.M.E. Church, Niles. The Rev. Jared L. Graves of Franklin A.M.E. Church will officiate.
Burial will follow ar Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac.
Mary was born on Aug. 20, 1919 in Marlinton, W.V. to Williams Madison Boggs and Mable Clara (Wheeler) Boggs.
On Dec. 1, 1951, she married Earl William Evans in Marlinton. He proceeded her in death in 1967.
Mary came to Dowagiac in 1968 from West Virginia. She was a member of the Franlin A.M.E. Church and of its Missionary Society.
Mary was well known to be singing all around the house, even being heard from outside when she was home alone.
She enjoyed keeping the family correspondence with many cards and letters.
Mary is survived by two sons, Carl (Doris) Boggs of Kansas City, Mo., and Wilbur G. Boggs of South Bend, Ind., and Ron (Ann) Evans of Southfield; a daughter, Norma (Priece) Rich of Dowagiac; a sister, Clara Wilson, of Southfield; and many nieces, nephews and cousns who affectionately called her "Mom Mary."
Along with her parents and her husband, Mary was also proceeded in death by sisters Rosie Williams, Josephine Boggs, Anabell Maxwell, Ethel Stewart and Glenna Jefferson; brothers Sanford, William, Carl and Ralph Boggs; and a granddaughter, Tamika Whitmore, who died on April 19, 2008.
Friends may call Halbritter Funeral Home from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
Memorial controbutions may be made to Hospice at Home.
